$4m Gandolfi is a World Record at Christie's

The Christie's New York sale of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Watercolours, on January 27, was a big success - with two World Record sales among the top lots.

The biggest seller was The Entrance to the Turkish Garden Café, 1812, by Louis Léopold Boilly (1761-1845), which set a new world auction record for the artist at $4,562,500.

Just behind it was Diana and Callisto, an oil on canvas by Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802).

The painting's final hammer price of $4,114,500 set a new record value for the late-Baroque Italian painter.

Depicting Diana, the chaste and vengeful goddess who expels the nymph Callisto from her grotto upon learning of her secret pregnancy, the artwork was sold by a private US collector.

Overall, the Christie's sale achieved a total of $39,526,500, with sell-through rates of 64% by lot, 65% by value.
