Andy Warhol's Elizabeth Taylor print up 92% on estimate

An offset lithograph print of Elizabeth Taylor by Andy Warhol has sold for $115,000 at Phillips New York, achieving an increase of 91.6% on a $60,000 estimate.

The portrait was executed in 1964, when Taylor had been suffering with pneumonia for a number of years. Taylor was the second famous woman Warhol would depict in his iconic series, which began with his celebrated image of Marilyn Monroe in 1962.

Several high profile sales of some of Warhol's best-known works will take place over the coming months. On May 13, his iconic White Marilyn will auction with a $12m-18m estimate at Christie's New York.

Additionally, a set of six self-portraits will sell as a single lot at a May 14 sale at Sotheby's New York with a valuation of $25m-35m.

Robert Indiana's Book of Love Suite (1996) made $97,500 against a $60,000 estimate - an increase of 62.5%.

The set of 12 screen prints features the artist's iconic LOVE symbol, which was initially created for a MOMA Christmas card in 1964.

It later became an icon of the hippie movement. Indiana adapted the design into a sculpture between 1966 and 1968, installing it in public spaces in Philadelphia and New York.

Twelve poems accompany the prints, which are each hand numbered, signed and dated.
