Art star prize entrants auction in London

Collectors have an opportunity to spot the next Warhol or Picasso when contemporary art goes under the hammer at Vision 21: A Sale of Post-War Paintings, Prints, Photographs, Sculpture and Modern Design Furniture.

The auction will take place at Bonhams, Knightsbridge on Wednesday March 17.

The fine artworks were selected as exhibitors in the John Moores Prize. The biennial prize, based in Liverpool, has a track record for spotting rising talent.

David Hockney, Peter Doig and Richard Hamilton are among the past winners, and its judging panel has boasted the likes of Tracey Emin and Sir Peter Blake.

Established by the founder of Littlewoods, John Moores, in 1957, the prize was intended as a showcase of the "best and most vital work being done today throughout the country." It was launched in Liverpool to balance London's increasing dominance of the arts.

The sale promises works by some of Britain's most exciting contemporary artists represented by leading London art galleries. Lots will include Maureen Paley, Alan Cristea and artists from the Lisson Gallery.

Kate Donachie's Tent (estimated at 600-800), Martin McGinn's Chandelier II (estimated at 800-1,200) and Alex Landrum's Perfect Accident No 5 (estimated at 800-1,200) are among the sale's most outstanding paintings.

They will auction alongside works by Roger Kelly, Alan Brooks, Sybille Berger and Sue Arrowsmith.

Meanwhile, a set of six works by the British artist, Chantal Joffe - who has featured in Tate Liverpool's New Contemporaries exhibition, and is represented by Victoria Miro - will also be sold by Bonhams one week earlier.

Joffe's works will be part of its sale of Post War and Contemporary Art and Design at New Bond Street on Wednesday March 10.
