'Battered' Spiderman could crawl to the top at Mound City's sale, this weekend
Comic book collectors have been rather spoilt in the last couple of weeks. Whilst many auctioneers have a lull in August, two of the biggest comic sales of the year went down.

Heritage was the more recent of the two, with a copy of Action Comics #1 (Superman's first appearance) making $149,375, ahead of some top-notch Spiderman rarities. The auction also featured so wonderful Carl Barks works.

Ahead of that, ComicConnect had sold a pensioner's copy of Captain America #1 in great condition for the fantastic, world record breaking price of $343,000.

There is already another comic book auction looming, however. The goods on offer are perhaps not as high-grade as the top lots in the most recent sales, they are valuable nevertheless - and within reach of a greater number of collectors.

Amazing Spider-man 1 graded 4.5
The wall-crawler is in pretty good shape here...

As at Heritage, Spiderman dominates the highest ranked lots with a copy of The Amazing Spider Man #1 graded at an attractive 4.5 went up with a minimum bid of $1,500 and has drawn the eye of several collectors already.

That issue was not, as Spider-fans will know, the very first appearance of the webslinger.

That honour went to Amazing Fantasy #15, and a copy of that issue appears here too, albeit one owned by someone who doesn't appear to have loved Spidey that much - perhaps it's from the Green Goblin's collection.

It has been battered around in a brutal fashion and is even missing the bottom part of the front cover, revealing the page behind. The result is that Spidey appears to be unheroically shoving a villain's face in the general direction of a man's crotch.

Low quality Amazing Fantasy 15 comic book Spiderman
...but here, Spiderman has had his legs pulled off

Despite its disastrous rating by the CGC of 0.5, the copy has received 14 bids starting from a minimum of $500. At least the new owner will be able to read it without worrying about dramatically reducing the value.

Completing a trio of Marvel comics competing for the top spot is a very nice copy of Daredevil #1, which refers back to the stable's past successes with The Fantastic Four and once more Spiderman.

Daredevil was groundbreaking in being the first blind superhero, but the comic is visually in the best condition, graded at 7.0 and bearing a minimum bid of $550.

Mound City Comics runs until Saturday (August 27) in Missouri and online. Watch this space for the results as they come in.
