Bellermann's Venezuela landscape to make $900,000 with Sotheby's?

Ferdinand Bellermann's Costa de la Guaira a la Caida del Sol, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Venezuela ever created, spearheads Sotheby's Latin American art auction on 28-29 May in New York.

Bellermann's landscape has been housed in the same noted collection since it was purchased directly from the artist in 1874

The astonishingly vivid work is expected to sell for between $700,000 and $900,000. A large scale panoramic view, it has been housed in the same collection since it was acquired from the artist in 1874.

Sotheby's is once again expecting strong results for its Latin American sale, with a total of 49 world records set in its May 2012 auction.

Portrait of Moctezuma
Sotheby's hopes to follow its November 2012 record with this portrait of Moctezuma and Cuauhtemoc, two great Aztec leaders

The auction house also saw a record for a piece of colonial Latin American art in its November 2012 auction, after selling Portrait of Moctezuma II - an anonymous work - for $1.6m.

It hopes to follow this with Portrait Of Moctezuma Y Cuahutemoc, which is estimated at $300,000-400,000.

Also starring in the sale is a major discovery from Joaquin Torres-Garcia, 1931's Composition Constructive, which has been given a $700,000-900,000 valuation.

The piece was created at the height of Garcia's career as the father of Latin American abstraction. Since being purchased by his friend Lysiane Ray, it has remained with her family for 80 years.

A classic representation of Torres-Garcia's work, his signature constructivist grid is filled with the familiar symbols found throughout the Uruguayan's work.
