Venice, View of the Molo from the Bacino di San Marco (a painting attributed to Bernardo Bellotto) is to highlight an old masters sale at Sotheby's New York.

It carries an estimate of $70,000-90,000 ahead of the January 30 sale.

Venice Bellotto Sothebys
Bellotto was the nephew of renowed Venetian view painter Canaletto

The piece is from around the mid to late 18th century and was originally believed to have been painted by Canaletto, whose work sells for substantially more.

Bellotto was Canaletto's nephew and studied under him, often using his name to further his own career.

The auction house comments: "Stylistic comparison with other works of this period suggests a closer affinity to Bernardo Bellotto than to Canaletto.

"Based on comparison with the catalogue description and photograph from the important Leningrad Museum and Palace sale held at Lepke Auction House in Berlin in 1929, it seems probable that this is the same work that was deaccessioned by the Museum as an authentic work by Canaletto."

Two studies, one of a lute player and the other a viola player, from the studio of Hendrick Ter Brugghen are offered as a single lot with a valuation of $50,000-70,000.
