Chinese libation rhino horn charges into California auction

Californian auctioneer IM Chait's Beverly Hills auction gallery will offer fine collections of Chinese porcelains, carved jades and ivories and other treasures later this month.

All will go under the hammer at its Asian and International Fine Arts Auction on Sunday, June 27 - promising collectors and investors plenty of opportunities in the highly-lucrative unique and historic collectibles markets.

Among the sale's numerous highlights is this treasure from China's rich heritage: an intricately carved antique Rhinoceros horn libation cup. It will auction with a catalogue estimate of $50,000-70,000.

Depicted within the cup's carvings are various elite members of Chinese society: sages, equestrians, and attendants acting out their roles within a cloud-shrouded landscape. The landscape also features deer, fruit and peonies.

Aside from Chinese antiquities, the final third of IM Chait's auction will offer luxury Swiss wristwatches, European decorative arts and American sterling silver.

For now, IM Chait's remarkable Rhinoceros horn libation cup could be the latest in a long line of successful sales in the ever-growing Asian collectibles markets...

Last week, Sotheby's held the biggest multiple-collection Asian art sale ever staged in France. Also at Sotheby's last week, a Qing Dynasty Chinese table clock sold for $3.8m.
