Early LS Lowry painting reveals secrets at Tate Britain exhibition

An early and lesser-known painting by LS Lowry will star in Tate Britain's exhibition of the artist's urban landscapes, which is the first to be held in London since his death in 1976.

The unnamed painting - a classic depiction of a crowded town square against an industrial skyline - is painted on the back of the wooden panel used for Lowry's The Mission Room 1936.

It is an earlier version of two works that also feature in the exhibition: Our Town 1941 and A Town Square 1928.

The link between the two demonstrates Lowry's working processes and how he frequently revisited his favourite scenes over many years.

In total, the exhibition, entitled Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life, displays 90 of the artist's finest works and will run until October 20.

In May, the auction record for a pencil drawing by LS Lowry was set at $320,538 at Bonhams.
