Eduardo Paolozzi's Head sculpture estimated at $38,000

Head, an experimental 1993 bronze sculpture by Scottish artist Eduardo Paolozzi, is expected to highlight Christie's London sale of Modern British and Irish Art on July 11.

Paolozzi Head sculpture
Eduardo Paolozzi is remembered for having taught original Beatles bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe, at Hamburg Art College.

Estimated to be worth £20,000-25,000 ($30,480-38,100), the fragmented bronze bust is signed, dated and numbered "E Paolozzi/1993/1/1" by the artist.

The work's provenance could not be better, having been gifted to its present owner by Paolozzi.

Portraits and heads recur throughout the late artist's works, often in scrambled, fractured or deconstructed forms.

In 2006 - a year after his death - an abstract frog sculpture sold for £39,600 ($59,270) at Sotheby's, bringing a 58.4% increase on the work's £25,000 top estimate.

Since 2006, prices for works by Paolozzi have remained relatively steady, however, the finest examples seldom appear at auction. The present sale will therefore give serious investors a rare opportunity to assess the market in relation to his work.

Aside from his artwork, Eduardo Paolozzi is remembered for having taught original Beatles bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe, at Hamburg Art College.

Paolozzi later described Sutcliffe as one of his "best students".

Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles, we currently have a pair of Stuart Sutcliffe original drawings in stock. The captivating drawings, which are in fine condition, come with a letter of provenance which states how the sketchbook was the property of the Sutcliffe estate until it was sold in 2003 at a Bonhams auction.
