Steichen was one of the highest paid photographers of his era

American Steichen (1879-1973) was both a significant painter and photographer.

He worked for Conde Nast in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming one of the world's highest paid photographers, and later went on to become director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The record for his work is $2.9m for his The Pond - Moonlight, which holds the distinction of being the fifth most valuable photograph ever sold.

L'Aile aux Geraniums by Henri Jean Guillaume Martin (1860-1943) realised $149,000.

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin was a commercially successful painter

While not considered a pioneering artist, Martin developed a popular following during his lifetime due to his masterly command of colour and technique.

We have this letter signed by Pierre-Auguste Renoir - a friend and contemporary of Martin.

George Wesley Bellows' Mountain Farm (1922) also performed well, achieving an increase of 40% against a $60,000-80,000 estimate to make $112,500.

Bellows (1882-1925) was one of the most significant artists of his generation, best known for his unflinching depictions of urban American life.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates bought his 1910 painting Polo Crowd for $27.5m at Sotheby's New York in 1999 - a record price for the artist.
