Eugene Girardet's The Attack expected to make $39,000

Eugene Alexis Girardet's The Attack (1894) is selling at Christie's.

The painting will lead a sale of 19th century European art in London on September 8 with an estimate of £20,000-30,000 ($25,860-38,790).

Eugene Girard Attack
Eugene Girard's The Attack is a prime example of his orientalist work

Girardet was a Swiss-born orientalist painter, who spent most of his career living and working in France.

His Eastern fantasies were inspired by a series of visits he made to Algeria in the late 1800s.

The present work depicts a cavalry charge by Arabs mounted on camels.

Like many French orientalists, Girardet's work retains a large following.

His Passage a Bou Saada made £80,500 ($133,783) at Sotheby's in 2014 - more than double its £40,000 ($66,476) estimate.

Other highlights of the sale include Delphin Enjolras' After the Ball.

The lot is typical of Enjolras' work, in that it's a softly lit scene showing a woman in a moment of quiet contemplation.

It's valued at around £12,000-18,000 ($15,579-23,368).

Horsemen by the Stream by Georges Washington (no relation to his more famous namesake) is expected to make £10,000-15,000 ($12,930-13,390).
