Francis Cadell's An Old Croft, Iona leads Scottish art sale

Francis Cadell's An Old Croft, Iona has sold for £64,900 ($100,708) in an auction of Scottish art at Bonhams Edinburgh.

The sale took place on September 16.

Francis Cadell was a key figure in the Scottish colourist movement

Cadell (1883-1937) was a key figure in the Scottish colourist movement - a camp that drew its influence from both French impressionism and traditional Scottish landscape painting.

Their work fell out of fashion during the 1940s, but experienced a revival of interest since the 1980s that has seen values grow steadily.

The present lot shows a view from the isle of Iona, a place that Cadell loved and painted often.

Bonhams comments: "This is an Iona view Cadell returned to again and again, looking over Cuil Phail croft to Ben Buie and the Ross of Mull.

"On this occasion, the funnel of the Dunara Castle provides a further spot of colour."

Cadell's auction record is £553,250 ($855,380), set for a painting titled Florian's Cafe Venice at Sotheby's in 2011.

Joseph Farquharson's Startled made £35,000 ($54,311).

The work is a typical snow scene from the popular Aberdeenshire artist.
