Frank Frazetta's Sea Witch could set new artist record

Frank Frazetta's Sea Witch, a 1966 cover for Eerie Magazine, is the star of Profiles in History's Comic and Illustration Art auction.

With an estimate of $1m-1.5m, it's primed to set a new record price for fantasy artist Frazetta's work.

The record stands at $454,100, set for his iconic painting The Norseman (1972) earlier this year.

Sea Witch is one of the most important works from Frazetta's catalogue to come to auction.

It dates to a time in his career when he was becoming one of the most sought after artists in the pulp business.

The auction house comments: "The eye and the mind delight in all this. It exhibits Frazetta's dramatic and confident flair for illustrating fantastic scenes…

"It remains a dramatic, imposing, and compelling masterpiece 50 years after it was created and presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a top tier Frazetta oil."

Barry Windsor Smith's Artemis & Apollo is valued at $120,000-160,000.

Smith worked as an illustrator for some of the biggest names in the comic book industry, including Marvel and DC.

The present work is a rare large scale painting of enormous complexity and is likely to prove irresistible to buyers.

The sale will take place in LA on July 30.
