Frank Frazetta's The Norseman could exceed $350,000

The Norseman (1972), a striking piece of fantasy art by Frank Frazetta, could make around $350,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The painting was first seen on the cover of fantasy anthology Flashing Swords #1 in 1973.

Frazetta (1928-2010) was a pioneering fantasy and science fiction artist.

Heritage Auctions' vice president, Todd Hignite, says: "This image has all of the danger and drama you would expect in a Frazetta barbarian masterpiece.

"It was a personal favorite of Frazetta's. He was very pleased with the contrapposto stance of the main figure, which imbues him with power, tension and vitality.

"Frazetta was always in search of ways to depict the human figure in action and here he felt he had triumphed."

Earlier this year a piece titled Lion Queen sold for $140,000 in a major auction of Frazetta's work at Profiles in History.

Other important lots include Jack Kirby and Joe Sinott's unused cover for Fantastic Four #52 (1966) starring Black Panther, who was making his debut in the comic.

Black Panther, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, was the first black superhero to appear in a mass market comic.

The character is the most recent to be revived by Marvel for the big screen, a factor that could increase its value.

It's expected to make in excess of $80,000.

The sale will take place on May 13-14.
