George III style Carton Pierre Pier mirrors to make $80,000?

A pair of George III-style Carton Pierre Pier mirrors with an estimate of $60,000-80,000 are to lead Skinner's auction of European Furniture & Decorative Arts on October 5 in Boston.

The ornate, water gilded and cartouche shaped mirrors are built in the manner of the celebrated 18th century English cabinet-maker John Linnell - who produced the designs for the boxes at London's Drury Lane Theatre among many other commissions.

The mirrors were produced in the style of John Linnell

Linnell's firm was one of the largest in London at the time and made furniture rivalling that of other leading designers of that era - including John Cobb and Thomas Chippendale.

He was one of the first English furniture makers to be trained in design, having studied at St Martin's Lane Academy in the early to mid 1700s.

We have available two rare items directly attributed to John Linnell - a demi-lune commode and a mahogany and sandalwood cabinet.

A selection of fine silver will be sold alongside the other lots, including a William III sterling silver tankard with an estimate of $18,000-22,000. The tankard dates from 1696-1697 and was likely made for Thomas Watson-Wentworth, Baron Raby and 3rd Earl of Stafford.

An Elizabeth II shell pattern cutlery set is also offered. It dates to 1956-1961 and carries an estimate of $5,000-10,000. The set is comprised of 353.4 troy ounces of silver.
