Helmut Newton's Karl Lagerfeld portrait sells for $75,000

A portrait of Karl Lagerfeld by photographer Helmut Newton sold for $75,000 at Swann Auction Galleries in New York on February 19.

The photograph dates to 1976, when Lagerfeld was head of design at French fashion house Chloe.

Karl Lagerfeld is one of the world's best known fashion designers

Newton is one of the world's best known fashion photographers, his provocative and erotically charged work filling the pages of the most prestigious magazines from the 1960s onwards.

In 2008, his Sie Kommen sold for a record $662,000 at Christie's New York.

Gustave le Gray's Seascape with Clouds (1856) was another highlight, achieving $27,500.

Le Gray's groundbreaking work established him as one of the greatest photographers of his era. He developed a range of techniques that furthered the form - including the addition of wax to photographic negatives. This allowed for a greater level of detail in the final print.

In 1999 his Grande Vague, Sete became the most valuable photograph ever sold when it realised £507,500 ($840,370) at Sotheby's London - a record that remained in place until it was surpassed in 2003.

The sale included works from a range of other photographers, including Ansel Adams and Sebastiao Salgado.
