Helmut Newton's Tied-Up Torso to make $80,000 at Heritage?

Helmut Newton's 1980 work Tied-Up Torso is to lead a sale of photographs at Heritage Auctions in New York on October 16.

The image, numbered two of an edition of 10, is among Newton's most recognisable works and carries an estimate of $60,000-80,000.

Helmut Newton is a seminal figure in the field of fashion photography

Heritage notes: "Newton was largely influenced by Surrealism, particularly the work of artists Man Ray, Paul Delvaux, and Hans Bellmer; the influence of which can been seen when we examine Man Ray's sculpture, 'Venus Restauree'.

"Newton's intentional employment of the natural afternoon sunlight in Saint Tropez dramatically highlights the contours of the female form in much the same way that the binding string does.

"Known for his provocative imagery, Newton's 'Tied-Up Torso' perfectly summarizes the confrontational nature and surrealist undertones of his collective body of work."

A print of Newton's Sie Kommen recently sold for $47,000 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills.

A portfolio of 12 prints by acclaimed landscape photographer Ansel Adams is valued at $40,000-60,000.

It consists of a selection of images from between 1938 and 1948, including some from Adams' acclaimed Yosemite series. It is numbered 24 of an edition of 75.

A print of Adams' Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico sold for an artist record of $609,600 in a 2006 auction at Sotheby's New York.
