Outsider artist Howard Finster's Vision of Mary's Angel was the top lot of Slotin Folk Art's November 9 auction in Georgia, US.

The painting realised an increase of 22% when it sold for $43,000 against a $25,000-35,000 valuation.

Vision of Mary's Angel is a significant work by Finster

Finster (1916-2001) was a Baptist minister who began painting in the 1980s. He built a cult following when his artwork was used on the album covers of bands such as Talking Heads and REM.

An enormously prolific artist, he produced tens of thousands of paintings.

He also built a vast complex of buildings and religious exhibits from scrap materials in his native Georgia, known as the Plant Farm Museum.

Robinson, a notebook by Prophet Royal (1936-1997), realised $20,250 - outperforming its estimate of $200-400 by 4,962%.

Prophet Royal was consumed by misogynistic rage

A paranoid schizophrenic who turned to art when his marriage broke down in the 1970s, Royal worked in a number of unconventional mediums - producing notebooks and hand painted signs that warned of the end of days while referencing the breakup of his marriage.

Mister Fool by Sam Doyle (1906-1985) achieved a 41% increase on estimate, realising $17,000 against an $8,000-12,000 valuation.

A Gullah artist, native to Saint Helena Island, Doyle painted in house paint on pieces of corrugated tin. He exhibited his work in his yard, which received mainstream attention following his death in 1985.

Dr Buz, a painting of local voodoo healer Doctor Buzzard, achieved $43,000 at Slotin last year.
