Artwork from the world's first illustrated weekly news magazines, The Illustrated London News, will go on sale at Christie's on October 7, as part of the Interiors sale.

The magazine was published between 1842 and 2003 and covered some of Britain's most significant events during that time, including the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II, the first and second world wars and The Festival of Britain.

Highlighting the collection are two paintings by Terence Cuneo, one of Britain's leading artists of the day. The 1947 cover for the Royal wedding edition and the cover to celebrate the Festival of Britain are both estimated at £10,000-15,000 ($17,104-25,657).

Much of the collection is made up for the work of Fortunino Matania, "one of the most celebrated illustrators of the 20th century", says Christie's. Italian born, Matania moved to England in 1904 and began working for The Sphere - a sister publication - in the same year.

He went on to become the magazine's special artist for over 50 years, and was known for his photographic style. His depiction of women working in a munitions factory will lead bids at £700-1,000 ($1,197-2,052).
