An important desk by Eugene Printz has headlined Sotheby's 20th century design auction in New York, achieving $845,000 against a $350,000 estimate - an increase of 141.4%.

Printz (1879-1948) was a self-taught designer and carpenter, whose work is highly sought after by lovers of art deco.

This lot appeared in the December 17 sale as part of an interior created by acclaimed architect and designer Allen Wanzenburg, who explained its appeal: "Highly imaginative, this desk is a well-regarded masterpiece of exceptional design and craftsmanship.

"With its gentle, sinuous curves, it has both a sense of motion and a soft geometry.

"Of particular note is the meticulous workmanship and attention to detail. Printz is a master of elegantly joining contrasting materials such as metal and wood. The desk has an exquisite combination of unparalleled presence and modernity."

A Nenuphars chair by Louis Marjorelle (1859-1926) proved another highlight, achieving $653,000 - beating a valuation of $50,000 by 1,206%.

The lot features lines and highlights designed to mimic the natural world.

Marjorelle was an important designer in the art nouveau style and a founding member of the Ecole de Nancy, alongside Victor Prouve and Antonin Daum.
