Jane Alexander's Untitled could break the artist's auction record

An untitled sculpture by South African artist Jane Alexander could make $200,500 at Strauss & Co's November 11 sale in Johannesburg.

Alexander is best known for Butcher Boys, her seminal late 1980s work that demonstrates the dehumanising effects of racism and violence on human beings. It is one of the most popular artworks at the South African National Gallery.

Untitled is a work in a similar vein. It depicts an intimidating, eerily humanoid form seated in a contemplative pose that fixes an uncomfortable gaze on the viewer.

The sculpture was purchased at
Alexander's masters show in 1988

The sculpture was purchased after Alexander's masters exhibition in 1988 by its current owner, then an undergraduate student at the University of Wits in Johannesburg.

The student paid off the work in instalments over the course of a year.

The record for a work by Alexander was set by a sculpture, titled Racework - in the event of an earthquake, at Strauss & Co in 2010 that realised $106,149.

It is entirely possible that this upcoming auction could see a new record set for the artists work.
