Joaquin Sorolla's Buscandos Maricos set to auction for $1.5m

Joaquin Sorolla's Buscandos Maricos (Hunting Shellfish), painted in 1907, is to sell at Sotheby's 19th Century European Art sale in New York on November 8 with a $1m-1.5m estimate.

The painting is one of four works by Sorolla set for auction at Sotheby's in London and New York in November.

Executed in 1907, it features a depiction of a child digging for clams in the shallows - and features the artist's distinctly lyrical post-impressionist style.

Playa de Valencia will feature at a sale of 19th European Paintings in London on November 20.

Painted in the summer of 1910, the work features a heady and evocative depiction of fishermen unloading their catch on a Spanish beach.

Barcas en la playa (1894) and La Illegada de la pesca (1858) will feature estimates of £250,000-350,000 ($240,000-400,000) and £100,000-150,000 ($400,000-565,000), respectively.

The auction record for the artist is held by Pescadores Valencianos, which achieved £3.7m ($5.5m) at Sotheby's London in November 2012.

Adrian Biddell, Sotheby's head of department in London, commented: "As we have seen in the market in recent years, Sorolla's enduring appeal for collectors continues unabated.

"So it is a privilege to be offering such a complementary group of the artist's quintessential Valencian subjects at auction, and to be able to show them together in Madrid later this month.

"The four works display to perfection Sorolla's unparalleled virtuosity in capturing the essence of the scene before him, bathed in the light of his native Valencia."
