John Atkinson Grimshaw's Autumn Lane makes $469,000

John Atkinson Grimshaw's An Autumn Lane made £314,500 ($469,202) in a sale of Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite art at Christie's London.

The auction took place on December 16 and featured a wealth of 19th century artists.

The present lot dates to 1886 and is typical of Grimshaw's style.

Bonhams comments: "One of the most recognisable subjects created by Grimshaw is of a quiet lane flanked by high walls, trees, a partly hidden mansion, and a single figure, usually female, positioned somewhere along a leaf strewn road, highlighting the peaceful stillness of the momentǪ

"The compositional motif was first created in the early 1870s, when Grimshaw and his family had moved to Knostrop Hall, a seventeenth-century manor house near the River Aire to the east of Leeds city centre.

"The house in the present painting is very similar in architectural details to that of Knostrop Hall."

Henry Treffry Dunn's Prosperine was another highlight, realising £266,500 ($400,816).

The lot is a version of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founder Dante Gabriel Rossetti's iconic Prosperine and was painted under his direction.

Dunn worked as Rossetti's studio assistant from the 1860s onwards.

He writes on the back that he completed the preliminary work for Rossetti "during his last illness and would have been touched upon by him had he lived.

"After his death it came into my hands & I then finished it up to its present state that it now posesses. I am yours truly H. Treffry Dunn".
