John Durand portraits make combined $389,000 in NY

Two portraits by John Durand led a sale of Important American Folk Art at Sotheby's New York on January 25, realising $389,000 as a single lot.

The paintings, which show the polar explorer Captain Fitzhugh Greene and a woman believed to be his wife, were executed between 1768-1770.

Durand, who studied in England before moving to the US, is a mysterious figure, best known for a string of portraits of wealthy families produced between 1765 and 1782.
