John Leslie Breck canal scene could make $30,000 on October 13-14

A Venetian canal scene by painter John Leslie Breck (1860-1899) dating to 1897 will highlight Grogan & Company's fall auction in Massachusetts on October 13-14 with an estimate of $20,000-30,000.

Breck is credited with introducing impressionism to the US through an exhibition held in Boston in 1890. He studied under Monet in Giverny during the late 1870s.

Four works by Alexander Calder (1898-1976) also feature, including Eastham and an untitled work - both from 1949. Both lots carry estimates of $20,000-30,000.

Calder was one of the foremost contemporary artists of the 20th century, whose work span a variety of mediums ranging from sculpture to printmaking.

His Lily of Force carries the record price paid for his work, achieving $18.5m against an estimate of $8m-12m in 2012 - an increase of 54%.

A View of Paris by post-cubist painter Claude Venard is another highlight with an estimate of $15,000-25,000.

Venard was a member of the Forces Nouvelles, a collective that called for a return to traditional artistic values in defiance of the direction that the impressionists and expressionists were moving in.

In 2011, his Deux Figures et un Elephant saw an increase of 133% when it sold for $35,000 against an estimate of $10,000-15,000 at Sotheby's in New York.

A wide selection of jewellery will also feature at the sale, including a Black Starr & Frost platinum, diamond and fancy yellow diamond ring, which is valued at $10,000-15,000.
