Do you like squares? Then this rare artwork by Josef Albers (1888-1976) could be right up your street. Entitled Study for Homage to the Square, the painting could bring €180,000-250,000 when it auctions in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday February 25.
Albers's art was on the cusp of the transition between traditional European art and the new American art. His influences included the constructivists and the Bauhaus movement. Themes like intensity and scale often feature in his works - as are evident in this painting.
'Homage to the Square: Setting Stucco' dates to 1958 and measures 76 x 76 cm. The work has been extensively exhibited in the US. Its former owners include the Janis Gallery in New York and a private collection in Dallas, Texas.

The rare art piece will surely draw plenty of attention when it auctions, next month. Albers work proved very influential during his lifetime, and many "hard-edge" abstract painters of the 1950s and '60s gleaned inspiration from his art.
Meanwhile, Albers's work as an educator in Europe and in the United States helped found some of the 20th century's most far-reaching and influential art education programmes.
Legacy is integral to value with collectibles, and it will be interesting to see how this piece does in Brussels.
