Kees van Dongen's L'elegante au chapeau to lead at Christie's

Kees van Dongen's L'elegante au chapeau is expected to make £400,000-600,000 ($570,800-856,200) at Christie's.

It will provide the star lot of the impressionist and modern art day sale in London on February 3.

Kees Van Dongen
Kees van Dongen was associated with the fauvist movement

Van Dongen was one of the earliest artists to embrace fauvism, an art movement founded as a reaction against impressionism that emphasised wild colours and brushwork.

The present lot depicts a beach scene.

The auction house comments: "In L'?l?gante au chapeau, Van Dongen presents the whole spectrum of this beach scene, with life by, on and in the water.

"The spectrum notion is made all the more appropriate considering the boldness of the palette and the expressionistic brushstrokes that he has used in so many areas of the canvas.

"Here, it is used to great effect to chronicle the lifestyle of luxury - of elegance and indolence on the coast."

Van Dongen's record is $13.8m, set for Jeune Arab in a 2009 sale.

Max Beckmann's Stilleben mit T??rkenbund (Blumen mit Zigarrenkiste) is likely to be another highlight, with an estimate of £400,000-600,000 ($570,800-856,200).

Beckmann was an important German artist associated with the expressionists, although he always denied any involvement with the movement.
