Keith Haring charity auction features $156,500 sculpture

Sotheby's has joined forces with the Keith Haring Foundation and Galerie Jerome de Noirmont to help restore a mural painted by Haring at Paris' Necker children's hospital in 1987.

This $32,600-high estimated Haring work, Pop Shop Quad II, is among those up for auction. Haring died of AIDS in 1990, but his activism work lives on through many charity sales organised by his famous friends

The monumental work is painted on the hospital's outer walls and weather has sadly taken its toll on its condition. In response, 26 international artists have donated 32 works to a special auction on April 17 in Paris to raise funds for its restoration.

The auction will be highlighted by a 1987 Keith Haring sculpture that is expected to sell for $78,200-156,400.

All the auction proceeds will go to the hospital, exclusively for restoring the mural. Sotheby's is offering its support by staging the sale free of charge and waiving buyer and vendor's premiums.
