A Ken Price (1935-2012) sculpture has auctioned for $168,750.

The biomorphic sculpture, Up Back (2000), sold within estimate for $168,750 at Los Angeles Modern Art Auctions on October 11.

Initially shunned by the art world in the 1960s, the Californian's abstract works gained global acceptance in later years.

The auction house's director of modern design and fine art, Peter Loughrey, said: "On the market for the first time, this work is a stunning example of Price's amorphous sculpture because it looks so distinctly different when viewed from various angles.

"Price liked popular culture and cartoons. From one side, the bulbous shape brings to mind Matt Groening's animated show Futurama and the character Dr. John A. Zoidberg, while from another, I see Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars."

The sale also featured the $275,000 sale of John McCracken's Five Paintings III, while McCracken's Painting #6 achieved $237,500.
