Manuel Bravo Phillips
Manuel Alvarez Bravo is a key figure in the development of Latin American photography

Bravo (1902-2002) is the most significant Latin-American photographer of the 20th century.

At first, he drew his influence from the surrealists and cubists, but gradually began to explore explicitly Mexican themes (particularly death, folklore and religion) - reflecting the cultural awakening that followed the revolution.

Alfred Stieglitz' The Steerage (1907) is also likely to perform well.

Stieglitz Steerage
Stieglitz' The Steerage is regarded as one of the most important photographs of all time

The image is considered a turning point in the history of photography, as it represents one of the first documented applications of modernist principles to the medium.

Phillips comments: "The Steerage not only depicts human migration at a time of technological change, but as an icon of 20th century art it also encapsulates photography's coming of age as a fully modern art form."

It's expected to make £9,000-12,000 ($14,513-19,351).

A portrait of Stieglitz' wife, the painter Georgia O'Keefe, made $302,500 at Phillips last year. His auction record was set at $1.4m for another study of O'Keefe in 2006.
