Maqbool Fida Husain artworks to lead Sotheby's South Asian Art

A series of artworks from India's progressive artists, including Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011), will highlight Sotheby's auction of Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art on September 18 in New York.

The auction will also offer significant works by Pakistani and Sri Lankan artists, with pieces from Bikash Bhattacharjee, Lalu Prasad Shaw, George Keyt, Rashid Rana and Zarina Hashmi.

Indian art has long been tipped as the next big Asian success story, with auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's both anticipating strong sales in the future.

The market is already robust, with the current auction record for any Indian artwork held by Syed Haider Raza's Saurashtra at $3.4m following a 2010 sale.

Christie's recently announced that it will hold its inaugural auction in Mumbai in December, as the first international auction house to conduct a sale in India.
