Marc Newson Chop Top Table to make $160,000?

A Marc Newson Chop Top Table will highlight Christie's 20th Century Decorative Art and Design sale in London on October 30 with an estimate of £70,000-100,000 ($113,591-162,272).

The table, number one of a limited edition of 12, is a prime example of Newson's biomorphic design style, which eschews sharp edges in favour of flowing lines and rounded edges.

Newson is one of the best-known industrial designers of recent times, having worked for clients such as Qantas, Smeg, G-Star and Ford. He is also one of the biggest selling designers at auction, with a Lockheed chair selling for £1.1m ($1.7m) in London in 2009.

The upcoming (RED) charity auction on November 23 will see a number of specially designed Newson pieces auctioned to raise money for the charity.

A Narrow Papardelle chair by Ron Arad will feature an identical estimate. It consists of a long strip of flexible steel that can be unfolded to create an extension or rolled as a footrest.

Arad is well-known for his use of industrial materials, including steel and concrete.

Earlier examples of 20th century design will include works of glass and lighting, including Emille Galleu's art nouveau inspired Fireflies, an important flagon and stopper circa 1900. The piece carries an estimate of $40,000-60,000 ($64,846-97,270).

Examples of art deco sculpture will also feature, including Bruno Zach's The Riding Crop (1925) - estimated to bring $40,000-60,000 ($64,846-97,270) - and Demtre Chiparus' Miss Kita (Circa 1925), which is expected to sell for $30,000-50,000 ($48,638-81,063).
