Margaret Bourke White photograph will headline at Swann

Margaret Bourke White's At the Time of the Lousiville Flood, Kentucky will be one of the headline lots in Swann Auction Galleries' October 25 photography sale.

The shot was taken in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937 in the aftermath of a devastating flood and at the height of the Great Depression.

It shows a line of black Americans queuing for food.

The juxtaposition between the real and projected images of America is truly jaw-dropping. It's funny and shocking in equal measure.

Swann explains: "Bourke-White had arranged with LIFE to publish a portfolio of 12 classic images, of which The Louisville Flood was the first picture.

"Due to her death in 1971, the publication was never completed or fulfilled.

"In the 1990s, the LIFE Gallery of Photography began issuing posthumous prints from Bourke-White's negatives in a slightly smaller format."

This is one of 200 posthumous examples of this print issued from LIFE's archives. It's expected to make around $40,000-60,000.

A selection of 15 portraits by Yusuf Karsh carries an identical valuation of $40,000-60,000.

Some of the notable people featured include Muhammad Ali, Georgia O'Keefe and Winston Churchill.

Karsh is one of the most celebrated portrait artists of the 20th century due to his ability to capture something of his subjects' essence on film.
