Maya's Quilt of Life to lead sale of Maya Angelou collection

Maya's Quilt of Life, a work by textile artist Faith Ringgold, is to star in the sale of Maya Angelou's art collection.

The piece was commissioned by Oprah Winfrey and given to Dr Angelou (1928-2014) on her birthday in 1989.

Ringgold is famous for her story quilts, which combine both text and textile.

In this case she uses fragments from Angelou's books and writings - including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Gather Together in the Name.

The auction house comments: "Prominently hung in Dr. Angelou's Harlem home, Maya's Quilt of Life made a lasting impression on the many family members, friends and guests who came to visit - though this is the first time it has been publicly exhibited.

"This is also the first time one of Faith Ringgold story quilts has come to auction."

The lot is valued at $150,000-250,000.

Author, singer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou lived a remarkable life. Her collection includes a stunning array of work, with a particular emphasis on pieces by African American artists.

Among the highlights is a painting by John Biggers titled Kumasai Market, which carries an estimate of $100,000-150,000.
