Nolan's Midsummer Night's Dream valued at $32,000

A painting by Sidney Nolan, dating to 1963 and titled A Midsummer Night's Dream, is to auction at Ewbank's in Guildford, UK on September 25-27 with an estimate of £10,000-20,000 ($16,049-32,098).

Nolan is one of the highest-regarded Australian artists of the last century, famous for his stylised interpretations of historical and literary figures.

He is best known for his series of 25 paintings based on Ned Kelly, which follow the narrative of the legendary outlaw's story while providing a space for the artist to explore themes of duplicity and injustice.

First Class Marksman, from the Kelly series, holds the record price paid for his work at auction - achieving $5.4m in 2010.

A work by Francesco Zanin (1843-1890), detailing a scene of masked figures in Venice, is another highlight. Often compared to Canaletto, the great painter of the Venetian canals, Zanin is perhaps best known for his detailed paintings of ceremonies and festivals.

The painting has been valued at £10,000-15,000 ($16,049-24,074). In 2008 another piece by the artist sold for $64,857 in Italy.

A still life by Alberto Morrocco also features, dating to 1987 and valued at between £5,000-10,000 ($8,024-16,049). In 1950 Morrocco was appointed head of painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, where he spent the rest of his career.

Heavily influenced by the avant garde artists such as Braque and Picasso, he was renowned for his vivid still life and figurative painting. In 2006 a still life by Morrocco sold for £98,000 ($157,368) at Sotheby's in London.

We have this postcard of The Absinthe Drinker by Pablo Picasso, signed by the artist himself. Sign up to our free weekly newsletter for more news and information on art and collectibles.
