'Occupied Japan' collectibles return to #1 spot in Kovels' popularity list

Popular price guide Kovels' regular charts offer a great insight into what collectors are looking for, in this case at the beginning of 2011's third quarter.

The Kovels' Top Ten list is based on the results of hundreds of thousands of searches that took place on Kovels' website during July, 2011.

According to Kovels, its searches are often due to news of a World Record price or an amazing find, and there have been plenty of each this year.

Key recent events identified by Kovels include the Cincinnati Art Museum's rediscovery of more than 800 old musical instruments that had been stored and forgotten.

These included instruments like a Burmese crocodile zither, a Native American ceremonial raven rattle and a Chinese version of a hammered dulcimer.

Kovels reckons that this explains the popularity of "Musical Collectibles" at number six in the chart.

Meanwhile, after vanishing from the chart in June, Occupied Japan has once again returned to the top of Kovels' list.

"Occupied Japan" was an identifying mark printed on items made during the US occupation of Japan in the years following World War II, 1947-1952.

These pieces include pottery, figurines and other collectibles which are today highly sought-after among collectors.

Kovels' latest Top Ten for July 2011 is as follows:

1. Occupied Japan
2. Clock
3. Doll
4. Coca-Cola
5. Bottle
6. Musical Collectibles
7. Paintings
8. Amber Glass
9. Milk Glass
10. Red Wing
