Hodgkin was an abstract artist acclaimed for his warm washes of colour.

He was a regular in London’s auction houses and spent a fortune on items that inspired him.

Among the highlights is a still life painting of a bowl by Patrick Caulfield, valued at £300,000-500,000 ($396,180-660,300).

Hodgkin was a passionate lover of classical Indian art and a number of paintings from the sub-continent feature in the sale. A wealth of Islamic rugs and tapestries will also be offered.

Much of the proceeds from the sale will go to charity, as stipulated in Hodgkin’s will.

Hodgkin’s partner, Antony Peattie, said: “Howard liked the idea of a sale after his death. The objects have served their purpose to him, they were what he called his ‘Must Haves’ that, in some mysterious way, fed his work.

“But now they amplify his absence.

“After he died the house was so sad: all these objects remained in place but, after 33 years that we spent together, everything had changed.

“The sale represents a personal portrait of Howard. And it will enable his executors to fulfil his wishes."
