Painting of a painter, behind a painting

Harold Knight's portrait of Alfred Munnings reading, which had been hidden behind his wife Laura's Le Carnival for as much as a century, proved its £30,000-50,000 estimate wrong as intrigued bidders pushed it all the way up to £115,250.

Laura Knight's Le Carnival behaved more predictably, selling on target at £25,000. It's not one of her most celebrated works.

Munnings' evocative own work Horses and Gypsy Caravans, which captures some summery beauty of the animals, just squeaked past its expected £200,000-300,000 price to be taken away for £301,250.

There were several lesser works by Munnings in the sale, mostly based around horses, and almost all of them beat their estimates, notably his watercolour on paper The Road to the Fair, showing a wintery scene which also doubled its estimate of £25,000-35,000 to sell for £58,850.

Munnings sometimes painted rainy scenes, but as he painted 'live' it's not surprising this is unusual in showing a snowy one.
