Pei-Ming's Prince Charles portrait to raise $480,500 for charity?

Yan Pei-Ming's portrait of Prince Charles will auction for charity at Sotheby's on October 16 at its Gala Evening and Auction in London, which is being held to coincide with Frieze week.

Prince Charles Portrait Pei-Ming
Pei-Ming's work is characterised by bold and expressive brushwork

It is the first portrait of the prince ever painted by a Chinese artist. With profits to benefit The Prince's Drawing School and the Mimi Foundation, it is expected to raise between £200,000-300,000 ($320,242-480,363).

The Mimi Foundation was established in 2004 by influential collector Myriam Ullens, and operates wellness centres for cancer patients across Switzerland, France and Belgium.

The Prince's Drawing School was founded by The Prince of Wales himself, and aims to raise the profile of drawing through teaching and practice.

Yan Pei-Ming (b.1960) is one of China's most renowned contemporary artists, gaining international recognition for his striking monochrome portraits, which are often painted on a large scale.

His work is featured in some of the world's most respected institutions, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and Kunsthalle Mannheim in Germany.

Also starring will be 38 other new and important works donated by some of the world's leading contemporary artists, including Anthony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Andreas Gursky, Sterling Ruby and Liu Xiaodong.
