Piet and Ida Sanders collection set to sell for $3.9m

The Piet and Ida Sanders Collection is to cross the block at Christie's Amsterdam on April 15 and 16. With estimates ranging from €500 ($646) to €600,000 ($775,823), the sale is expected to realise in excess of €3m ($3.9m).

Piet and Ida Sanders were married for more than 70 years, during which time they amassed an extraordinary collection of modern and contemporary art and ethnographics. Piet Sanders was a professor who played a unique role in the development of international commercial arbitration.

The anticipated top lot is Lucio Fontana's 1954 Concetto Spaziale sculpture, which is thought to be worth between €400,000 ($517,115) to €600,000 ($775,503).

Another highlight comes in the form of Marino Marini's delicate sculpture Atomico. Valued at between €180,000 ($232,706) and €250,000 ($323,203), the piece became part of the couple's daily life, as it was displayed on the Sanders' kitchen windowsill.

Following his wife's death in 2010, Piet Sanders died last year aged 100.
