Pioneering architect's vision to sell in Paris

After its sell-out Chandigarh Project I auction in 2006, ARTCURIAL of Paris is holding a follow-up auction.

The Chandigarh Project II sale will take place on Tuesday, February 16.

The second auction will aim to chart a different aspect of the work of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Chandigarh.

Le Corbusier, assisted by Pierre Jeanneret, was commissioned to design Chandigarh, Punjab's new capital - which he subsequently redesigned as the modern town of his dreams.

Chandigarh gave Le Corbusier the first opportunity to give concrete, all-embracing expression to his visionary ideas - blending architecture, town-planning, the environment and interior decoration.

Chandigarh Project II will evoke the project's origins through archive material reflecting Le Corbusier's masterwork.

Sketches, drafts, drawings, plans, blueprints and models will all feature in the sale offering "a veritable manifesto for modern architecture," according to ARTCURIAL.

Auction highlights will include carved moulds, impressions on rough concrete vital to realising the eventual look of Le Corbusier's buildings.

Rare concrete lighting bollards, original symbolic moulds and Le Corbusier's vividly colourful tapestry designs will also feature.

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris (1887-1965) - known to the world as Le Corbusier - was a Swiss-French architect, designer, urbanist, writer and also painter.

He is famous for being one of the pioneers of what now is known as Modern architecture, or the International Style.

Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) was a Swiss Architect and Le Corbusier's cousin. The pair collaborated over 20 years.

The auction begins at 8pm, in Paris.
