Rare glass 'Botanical Upright Cube' paperweight sells for $3,250

Freeman's May 21 sale of the Labow/Seacat Paperweight Collection was eagerly received by the paperweight collecting community, selling 28% over the low estimate with only four of the 243 lots going unsold.

The collection, comprised of primarily modern and contemporary rare paperweights, totalled nearly 600 pieces and was assembled over a 30 year period by Jack Labow and Mel Seacat of New York City and Long Beach Island.

It featured a large number of unique paperweights by Baccarat and St Louis which proved to be popular with buyers in the room, on the phones, and over the internet.

'Botanical Upright Cube with Root People' sold for $3,250

Of particular interest to collectors were the 60 pieces by contemporary New Jersey glassmaker Paul Stankard, whose 'Botanical Upright Cube with Root People' sold for $3,250 (including 25% buyer's premium) and was the top lot of the day.

Meanwhile, a Barry Sautner cameo cut 'Orchid' diatreta paperweight was another of the day's top lots, selling for $2,625 - nearly two and half times its $1,000-$1,500 estimate.

"The sale proved to be a fantastic opportunity for the devoted collector to purchase from a wide selection of beautiful modern weights by some of the best contemporary makers" said Douglas Girton, Freeman's specialist for the sale.

"The sale also illustrates the strength of unique, single owner collections in the current antiques and collectibles marketplace. Buyers will still get excited for new material from private sources," he added.
