Robert Indiana's Love prints will auction at $55,000

On December 9 in London, Bonhams will offer a complete signed artist's proof set of Robert Indiana's famous Love prints.

Indiana's Love design has become an iconic symbol

First created for the New York Museum of Modern Art's Christmas card series in 1964, the Love image has become an art icon.

The design has since featured on American stamps, and has been recreated around the world, including for the Obama presidential campaign.

In May 2011, a sculpture of the Love design sold for $4.1m.

One of 50 proof sets containing 12 screen prints and 12 embossments, the lot is expected to sell for £25,000-35,000 ($39,183-54,856).

Sharing that estimate is a fine impression of one of Rembrandt's most sought after etchings, The Great Jewish Bride, executed in 1685.

The title comes from the 18th century, relating the work to Rembrandt's Little Jewish Bride. However, it is likely that the model for the etching was his first wife, Saskia, posing as Esther, the Jewish heroine of the Old Testament.

Also starring in the sale is a rare hard-ground etching with aquatint of David Hockney's Diploma, a design cheekily drawn on his Royal College of Art diploma.

Valued at £15,000-20,000 ($23,510-31,346), it was created in an edition of 50, though Bonhams states only 40 were printed by Hockney.
