Robert McCall's Earth Orbit 98 poised to make $250,000 in October

Earth Orbit 98 (1977), a work by Robert Theodore McCall, is to headline Heritage Auctions' Illustration Art sale in New York on October 17-18.

McCall's (1919-2010) characteristic take on space art graced a number of publications over the course of his career, including Life magazine.

He was also one of several artists chosen by NASA to document the space programme of the 1960s and 1970s, and designed murals for the National Air and Space Museum and the Pentagon.

Science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once described McCall as "the nearest thing we have to an artist in residence in outer space."

The work carries an estimate of $200,000-250,000.

Patrick Nagel's Posing with a Panther (1983) is valued at $60,000-80,000.

Nagel (1945-1984) worked in a distinctive style that was used heavily in advertising during the 1980s.

Her Casual Pose, also from 1983, realised $93,750 at Heritage last year.

Also featured are a number of works from legendary pin-up artist Gil Elvgren, including Swingin' Sweetie (1968), painted for calendar company Brown & Bigelow.

The market for Elvgren's work is booming - with a piece titled Thinking of You (Retirement Plan) achieving $209,000 earlier this year.
