Roy Lichtenstein’s Woman sculpture makes $10.3m

Roy Lichtenstein’s Woman: Sunlight, Moonlight (1996) has sold for $10.3m at Phillips.

The sculpture was among the stars of the 20th Century & Contemporary Art evening sale in New York on May 18.

Lichtenstein Sunlight Woman

Lichtenstein's Woman: Sunlight, Moonlight is one of an edition of six

While Lichtenstein is best known for his iconic canvases, he also created a number of sculptures in the same style.

This example is one of an edition of six (plus one artist’s proof), made from brass and acrylic.

Like many of Lichtenstein’s most famous female figures, this woman is taken directly from the pages of popular 1960s romance comic book series Secret Hearts.

In the original frame, a man is telling her: “Don't count on it Doris! That’s the last you’ll ever see of my dear brother! He’s a failure and always will be one.”

She replies: “You’re wrong! He’ll be back…And a big success, too! Wait and see!”

Kate Bryant, Phillips' head of sale, commented: 'Woman: Sunlight Moonlight' has literally jumped off of the late nude canvases that came to characterize the artist's career, and into our space, where we can walk around it and really get the sense of the duality that's embodied in this work."

This was among Lichtenstein’s last major projects before his death in 1997.
