Salvador Dali etching plate estimated to sell for $40,000

A rare 1971 etching plate will draw crowds at a March 12 auction dedicated to Salvador Dali's work in London.

The etching plate is the most highly valued lot of the sale, estimated at $30,000-40,000. However, the remainder of the lots present a fantastic opportunity to acqurie the blue-chip artist's work at an affordable price, with estimates ranging from $500-10,000.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is also offering an affordable example of Dali's work, with this fantastic sketch that is thought to be of his wife Gala.

The etching plate at auction originates from the Song of Songs of Solomon portfolio, published in 1971 in a limited edition of 320, which comprises 12 etchings with stencil and gilding. It is being sold complete with an original signed etching and a certificate of authenticity from Mr Frank Hunter, director of the Salvador Dali Archives Ltd.

Another work from Song of Songs, entitled Let Him Kiss Me with the Kisses of his Mouth, shares the $30,000-40,000 estimate.

Dali's sculptural works provide some of the most exciting opportunities in the auction, with Cybele (Mother Earth) expected at $6,000-8,000. Conceived in 1972/1973, the bronze is signed by the artist and was created in a limited edition of 100.

Joining Cybele (Mother Earth) is 1968's The Bird Man. Drawing on ancient Egyptian god Horus for inspiration, the work was created in an edition of six examples with three artist's proofs, and is estimated to sell for $5,000-8,000.
