Scottish Art sale expected to bring £4m

In 2008, two art auctions themed on Scottish art achieved £9m between them. These took place in Scotland, but an auction taking place in London on September 30 highlights the increasing international interest in the area.

In fact bidders from 15 different countries participated in the 2008 sales.

The September 30 auction is to be dominated by Colourists.

Two still lifes by Samuel John Peploe will be under the hammer: Still Life of Roses with a Green Tablecloth (est £250,000-350,000) and Red and Pink Roses, Oranges and Fan (est £300,000-500,000).

The latter is seen as a particularly classic example of the artist's bold style which has been compared to Cézanne.

Ben More from Iona and Lady Lavery in Black are two pieces by Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, both estimated at £100,000-150,000. The former depicts a seascape with the 1km tall Ben More in the background.

Lady Lavery, who was once photographed for Vogue by Cecil Beaton, not to mention starring in adverts for Pond's Cold Cream, was a woman whose beauty Cadell has endeavoured to capture.

Of the non-Colourist painters, Peter Howson's portrait of Robbie Coltrane is receiving some attention. The other most notable artists outside that group are Jack Vettriano, Joan Eardley and Anne Redpath.

Anne Redpath's lively and colourful Summer Gaiety is expected to sell at £80,000-120,000, as is Eardley's The Shore, Corrie, Arran.

Vettriano's Bathers is perhaps the pick of the 15 works of his available and estimated at £100,000-150,000.

All the works are on view in Edinburgh this week from Tuesday to Thursday.

Collectors might consider Scottish art as a significant investment option, as increased international interest is a key factor in supporting collectible prices.
