Sol Lewitt was a pioneering force behind the development of minimalism

Sol Lewitt (1928-2007) was one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century. He is considered among the earliest proponents of both minimalism and conceptualism.

He often drew his bold geometric compositions directly on to the walls of galleries.

His preference for printmaking, combined with his status as something of a cult figure, means that his market is relatively low value when considered against the work of his contemporaries.

The record for his work is $749,000, set for a piece titled Wavy Brushstroke (1995) at Sotheby's in 2014.

Other lots include a sculpture by John McCraken titled Whiz (1966), which carries an estimate of $80,000-120,000.

Another important American minimalist, McCraken's work explores the boundaries between art and industrial design.

This example is partly constructed from fibreglass.

Jim Dines' Heart on a Rock (1986), one of an edition of six bronzes, could make $60,000-80,000.

Dines' work was included in the Norton Simon Museum's New Painting of Common Objects exhibition in 1962, the show credited with launching pop art, along with contemporaries like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

The sale is designed to help collectors of any means to enter the market, with estimates starting from as low as $800.
