Steichen's Auguste Rodin portrait makes 516% increase on valuation

A portrait of Auguste Rodin taken by Edward Steichen in 1907 realised $185,000 at Doyle New York's Rare Books, Autographs and Photographs sale on November 25.

It achieved an increase of 516% on a $30,000 high estimate.

The gum bichromate print depicts the sculptor in a similar pose to The Thinker, his iconic sculpture.

The photograph featured in the 1910 International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography, held at the Albright Art Academy in Buffalo, New York.

The exhibition represented a culmination of sorts for the photo-secessionist movement, of which Steichen was a member, which sought to promote photography as a fine art.

The Pond - Moonlight, another photograph by Steichen, is the fifth most valuable photograph in the world after realising $2.9m at an auction in 2006.

Steichen was also an accomplished painter, with Autumnal Afternoon - The Poplars, Voulangis (1909) realising $161,000 at Doyle New York earlier this month.

An 1876 first edition of the Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll realised a 614% increase on a valuation of $3,500, selling for $25,000.

The lot was sold with a signed letter to illustrator Henry Holiday bound in, along with a number of drawings by Carroll. There are no other known examples of drawings by the writer pertaining to his books.

We have this handwritten list by Arthur Conan Doyle, a contemporary of Carroll.
