Thomas Moran's Moonrise, Chioggia, Venice realises $155,000

Moonrise, Chioggia, Venice (1897) by Thomas Moran has realised $155,000 at Heritage Auctions in New York.

The painting was the top lot of the American Paintings, Drawing and Sculpture Signature Auction.

An English born member of the Hudson River School, Moran (1837-1926) is known as one of the foremost American landscape artists of his era.

He is perhaps best known for his series of sketches depicting the Yellowstone region, which were crucial to the designation of the area as a national park in 1872.

For the rest of his career he created a number of large-scale paintings of these sketches, including two that are housed in the Smithsonian in Washington.

Another painting by the artist, A Bit of Acoma, New Mexico (1911), achieved $81,250.

The record for Moran's work was set at $17.7m in 2008 for Green River of Wyoming.

Logging in Vermont, a painting by Aldro Thompson Hibbard (1886-1972), sold for $87,500.

A significant plein air painter from Massachusetts, Hibbard is best known for his scenes of loggers in the forests of Vermont.

It came close to his auction record, set at $88,875 for his painting Winter in New England, Probably a West River, Vermont View at Skinner in 2012.

Still Life with Game and Hunting Paraphernalia (1904) by Richard La Barre Goodwin (1840-1910) realised $62,500.

Goodwin was a trompe l'oeil painter who predominantly worked on lifelike renderings of cabin doors hung with game and hunting paraphernalia.
